Dana Iskakova

Dana Iskakova is an artist and cultural practitioner born in 1997 in Kazakhstan and currently based between Almaty and Basel. Her artistic practice is primarily participatory and process-oriented, focusing on forming situations and environments in which people can imagine and create together. Her current research examines propaganda and parafiction, exploring how fiction operates as both a tool of manipulation and a space of freedom.

She studied finance at the International IT University and liberal arts at Smolny College. Currently, Dana is pursuing a master’s degree in Fine Arts at the Institute Art Gender Nature, Basel Academy of Art and Design FHNW. In 2023, she founded a magazine on fictional art, If, the first issue of which was produced in collaboration with her colleagues from the MATA collective. As a member of the Central Asian research group DAVRA, Dana participated in documenta 15 (2022) and Archival Assembly #3 (2024).

Whose Voice Is This?
‍Film (2024)

The film traces the evolution of sound, speech, and music in Central Asian cinema from the 1960s to the 1990s. Through dubbed voices, shifting soundscapes, and soundtracks, it reveals how Soviet ideology gradually weakened and Perestroika’s freedoms emerged, reflecting broader transformations across the region. The film was commissioned by Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art for the Archival Assembly #3 festival in 2024 and was realized during a Living Archive residency, with support from the Goethe-Institut Uzbekistan, as a project by the Central Asian research group DAVRA.
